Every year students and parents ask me the same thing — "But what is the actual process to become a lawyer?" Between entrance exams, LLB degrees, bar enrolment and AIBE, the path looks confusing. It isn't. It is a simple, linear journey with five clear steps. Let me walk you through each one exactly as the rules stand today.
💡 Quick reality: You don't need to go to an NLU to be a successful lawyer. Roads exist through UILS, regional law colleges, and the 3-year LLB for graduates. What separates great lawyers is skill and consistency — not the name on the degree.
Step 1 — Finish Class 12 (Any Stream)
Choose the right entry point
Students from any stream — Arts, Commerce or Science — can become lawyers. If you're targeting a 5-year integrated law degree (BA LLB), your Class 12 marks matter both for eligibility (45% General / 40% SC-ST-PwD) and, on the PU route, for 50% of the merit formula.
Step 2 — Write the Right Entrance Exam
Pick based on your college goal
| Entrance Exam | Leads To |
|---|---|
| CLAT | 24 National Law Universities (UG) & affiliated institutes |
| AILET | NLU Delhi (UG + PG) |
| PU CET Law | UILS Chandigarh, PURC Ludhiana, PUSSGRC Hoshiarpur |
| AIL LET | Army Institute of Law, Mohali |
| SLAT | Symbiosis Law Schools (Pune, Noida, Nagpur, Hyderabad) |
| LSAT-India | Partner law colleges across India |
Step 3 — Complete the Law Degree (5-Year or 3-Year)
BA LLB after Class 12 — or LLB after graduation
Two routes exist. The 5-year BA/BBA/B.Com LLB is the integrated route straight after Class 12. The 3-year LLB is open to graduates of any discipline. Both finish with the same law degree and the same bar-entry rights. Top students often add an LLM later for specialisation.
Step 4 — Enrol with the State Bar Council
Get on the roll of advocates
After your LLB, you apply to the Bar Council of the state where you reside. This enrolment ("enrolment on the roll of advocates") registers you as an advocate — the step that gives you the right to practise, subject to clearing AIBE.
Step 5 — Clear AIBE & Receive Your Certificate of Practice
The final gate to the courtroom
The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is conducted by the Bar Council of India. Passing it earns you the Certificate of Practice, making you eligible to appear in courts across India. Enrolment alone is not enough — AIBE clearance is mandatory for actual practice.
How Long Does it Actually Take?
| Route | Total Time After Class 12 |
|---|---|
| Integrated BA LLB → AIBE | ~5.5 to 6 years (5-year degree + AIBE) |
| Graduation (3-4 yrs) → 3-year LLB → AIBE | ~7 to 8 years total from Class 12 |
| With LLM specialisation | +1 to 2 years |
Career Branches After Becoming a Lawyer
Once you hold your Certificate of Practice, the profession branches in many directions:
- Litigation — civil, criminal, constitutional cases in district courts, High Courts, Supreme Court.
- Corporate & in-house counsel — legal teams of companies, MNCs, banks, advising on contracts and compliance.
- Judiciary — via judicial services examinations (PCS (J), district judge exams).
- Public prosecution — working for the state as a public prosecutor.
- Legal academia — teaching at law universities and colleges.
- Law & policy — regulatory bodies, think tanks, international organisations.
💡 My advice to students & parents: Do not let the word "5 years" worry you. A lawyer's career spans 35+ years. Invest 5 years wisely, and the return — in stability, respect and income — is among the highest of any profession in India.
