PU LLB Counselling 2027
Merit List, Choice Filling & Seat Allotment

👤 By Megha Sharma 📅 August 12, 2026 ⏱ 8 min read

✅ Quick Answer: How does PU LLB counselling work?

PU LLB counselling is the post-result admission process where candidates ranked on the official merit list (50% entrance + 50% Class 12) fill their college preferences online and receive seats through merit-based allotment rounds. After each round, seats are confirmed only after document verification and fee payment. The 2026 cycle is complete; for 2027, expect result → merit list → choice filling → rounds on cetug.puchd.ac.in (5-year) / pglaw.puchd.ac.in (3-year).

Every year I see the same heartbreak: students with strong merit scores who lose UILS Chandigarh seats not because of their rank, but because of counselling mistakes — wrong choice order, skipped rounds, or missing documents. The exam gets you 50% of the way; counselling is the other 50%. Here is the complete PU LLB counselling walkthrough, from merit list to seat confirmation.

💡 Golden rule of PU counselling: Your rank is fixed, but your seat is not. The system allots seats purely on merit rank + your preference order — so your choices and your round attendance decide everything within your rank's reach.

The PU LLB Counselling Flow — Step by Step

Merit List: The Only Ranking That Matters

The final merit score is what determines your counselling rank. It is built exactly like this:

📊 Final Merit = 50% Entrance Test Marks + 50% Class 12 Marks + admissible weightage.

For the 3-year LLB programme the same principle applies with your qualifying degree percentage in place of Class 12. This is why at Surya Law Academy we treat boards and entrance as one joint target — a student who splits effort incorrectly loses rank despite a great paper.

Choice Filling — How to Rank UILS Campuses

You can apply for all three campuses through PU counselling. Here is the preference logic we use with our students:

PreferenceOptionWhy This Order
1stUILS Chandigarh — BA LLB (or B.Com LLB)Main campus, strongest faculty, placements and brand — highest cutoff (~74.7 merit)
2ndUILS Chandigarh — other integrated course180 + 180 seats at the main campus — always keep both courses
3rdUIL PURC Ludhiana — BA LLBRegional centre, cutoff ~71.0 merit
4thUILS PUSSGRC Hoshiarpur — BA LLBRegional centre, cutoff ~69.0 merit

ℹ️ Filling tip: Fill EVERY option you would genuinely accept, in true priority order. Never list a college above one you actually prefer — the system gives you your highest listed preference that is still available at your rank. Students who fill one or two options routinely lose safe seats.

Seat Allotment Rounds — The Waiting Game That Wins Seats

PU does not allot everything in one shot. Multiple rounds run as higher-ranked candidates upgrade or drop out. Our experience across 13+ years:

  • Round 1 is the loudest, not the last word. A round-1 seat at a lower preference is common even for strong candidates.
  • Never skip a round once your name appears in it — some of our best selections, including Bhavbhanjanjot Singh (PU Law AIR 7, 2025), moved up across rounds.
  • Seat acceptance + fee deadline is absolute. Late payment = seat cancelled, and you cannot reclaim it in the same cycle.
  • Reserved categories get their own merit list within the 15% SC / 7.5% ST / 27% OBC / 10% EWS reservations, so category cutoffs are far lower than General.

Documents Required for PU LLB Counselling

Missing documents are the #1 reason allotments get cancelled. Prepare this folder in advance — originals plus at least 3 photocopies:

  • Entrance admit card and score card
  • Class 10 certificate and marksheet (date of birth proof)
  • Class 12 marksheet and certificate (or qualifying degree for 3-year LLB)
  • Migration certificate and character certificate
  • Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwD) if applicable
  • Domicile certificate if required by the prospectus
  • Aadhaar card, 6–8 passport photographs, and fee payment mode

PU Counselling 2027 — Timeline Shape

Official 2027 dates are not out yet. Based on the completed 2026 cycle (UGLAW exam April 26 → result May 12 → counselling through mid-2026; 3-year LLB exam June 28 → counselling July–August 2026), the 2027 sequence is expected to follow the same shape with the exam expected around mid-2027. Track cetug.puchd.ac.in and pglaw.puchd.ac.in weekly once applications open.

How SLA Handles Counselling Season

  • Merit prediction: we compute your merit score the moment results drop and compare it against reference cutoffs (UILS 74.7 / Ludhiana 71.0 / Hoshiarpur 69.0).
  • Choice-filling support: every SLA student's preference list is personally reviewed — 5 minutes from PU, our counsellors know these campuses inside out.
  • Document audit: we checklist your original documents before verification day so no allotment is lost to paperwork.
  • Round tracking: we keep students moving through every round until they hold their genuine first choice.

PU 5-Year vs 3-Year LLB Counselling — Key Differences

Candidates often mix up the two PU law counselling processes. They run on different portals, different timelines and different document requirements:

ℹ️ Same principle, different paperwork: both processes rank candidates as 50% entrance + 50% qualifying-exam marks. A graduate preparing for the 3-year route should follow our PU 3-Year LLB guide; a Class 12 student follows the 5-year route above.

What Happens After Seat Allotment?

Getting "seat allotted" in your dashboard is not the finish line — three steps remain, and each has a deadline:

  • Accept the seat online within the window announced for the round. An unaccepted allotment rolls to the next candidate.
  • Pay the admission/seat-confirmation fee before the deadline — late payment cancels the allotment, and cancellation in one round can block your participation in later rounds.
  • Report for document verification with originals at the assigned campus/centre, then complete enrolment formalities before classes begin.

Common Counselling Mistakes That Cost Seats

  • Filling only one choice "to keep options open" — the system cannot allot you a college you never listed.
  • Ranking a college above your genuine preference "for safety" — safety lists belong below, never above, your real first choice.
  • Skipping later rounds after accepting a round-1 seat at a lower preference — upgrades come exactly here.
  • Arriving at verification without originals or photocopies — a single missing category certificate can cancel the allotment.
  • Ignoring the official portal and trusting social-media "counselling tips" — every schedule, fee and deadline on the portal beats any rumour.

Reservation & Category Allotment at a Glance

PU follows the Government of India reservation policy, and category candidates are ranked on separate merit lists within the same counselling system. That is why a reserved-category candidate's cutoff sits well below the General cutoff — the 2026 SC cutoff at UILS Chandigarh was around 62.50–63.50 against ~74.5 for General. The key message: if you hold a valid category certificate, your effective rank is your category rank, so fill the category column correctly and keep the certificate ready from application day itself.

CategoryReservation
SC15%
ST7.5%
OBC27%
EWS10%
PwD5% (horizontal)

Two practical notes from our counselling desk: (1) wrong category selection at application time is the most common reason allotments get cancelled at verification — re-check before submitting; (2) a valid certificate issued by the competent authority, within the prescribed format and validity, is non-negotiable at verification.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does PU LLB counselling 2027 start?
The 2026 counselling cycle was fully completed — the UGLAW result was declared on May 12, 2026 and 3-year LLB counselling finished in July–August 2026. For the 2027 cycle, counselling is expected to start after the result announcement, which follows the exam (expected mid-2027). The official schedule is published on cetug.puchd.ac.in / pglaw.puchd.ac.in.
How is the PU LLB merit list prepared?
As per Section 23 of the official PU prospectus, final merit = 50% entrance test marks + 50% Class 12 (or qualifying degree) marks + admissible weightage. The merit list ranks every eligible candidate on this combined score, and seats are allotted in that order during counselling.
What is choice filling in PU LLB counselling?
Choice filling is the step where shortlisted candidates list their preferred colleges and courses in priority order — for example UILS Chandigarh BA LLB first, then PURC Ludhiana BA LLB, then PUSSGRC Hoshiarpur. Seats are allotted by the system based on your merit rank and your preference order. Fill all options, in honest priority order, and never leave a seat you want unfilled.
What documents are needed for PU LLB counselling?
You need the entrance admit card and score card, Class 10 certificate and marksheet, Class 12 marksheet and certificate (or qualifying degree for 3-year LLB), migration and character certificates, category certificate (SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwD) if applicable, domicile certificate, Aadhaar card, passport-size photographs and fee payment details. Keep originals plus at least 3 sets of photocopies.
Can I improve my seat in a later PU counselling round?
Yes. PU conducts multiple allotment rounds, and merit lists keep moving as higher-ranked candidates upgrade or withdraw. If you get a lower preference in round 1, do NOT skip subsequent rounds — wait-listed candidates routinely receive upgrades. Attend every round you are eligible for and freeze only when you get your genuine first choice.
