⚖ Entrance Comparison

PU Law vs CLAT 2027
Which Entrance Should You Focus On?

👤 By Megha Sharma 📅 August 12, 2026 ⏱ 9 min read

✅ Quick Answer: PU Law or CLAT 2027?

Choose CLAT 2027 if your goal is an NLU anywhere in India; choose PU Law 2027 if you want UILS Chandigarh with far smaller competition — and because their dates and syllabi align, most smart aspirants prepare for both. CLAT runs first (December 6, 2026, 120 questions in 120 minutes); the PU exam is expected around mid-2027 (100 questions in 90 minutes). Same core skills, two entrance opportunities, two admission routes.

🥇 CLAT + AILET Specialist — 13+ Years

"Ma'am, should I target NLU or UILS?" — I answer this question hundreds of times a year, and the honest answer is rarely a single exam. In 13+ years of coaching, I have watched both CLAT-only and PU-only students regret the choice they skipped. This guide compares the two entrances honestly — pattern, competition, colleges, careers — and shows how our best students convert both into admission options.

💡 The SLA view: Treat CLAT 2027 as your national shot and PU Law 2027 as your regional certainty. The preparation cost of running both is roughly 1.2 exams, not two — the syllabus overlap is that high.

Pattern: The Real Difference Is in the Questions

Both papers reward the same core — Constitution, legal reasoning, current affairs, English, reasoning. The difference is form:

  • CLAT is a comprehension test. Nearly every section is passage-based. Students who read fast and infer well score; factual memorisation helps far less than reading practice.
  • PU Law is a knowledge + application test. Legal Aptitude and GK carry 80% of the marks directly — principle-fact questions, maxims, judgments, static GK and the last 8–10 months of current affairs.

ℹ️ Practical takeaway: A GK-strong, slow-reader student often outperforms in PU Law but struggles in CLAT; a fast-reader with weaker factual recall does the reverse. Score yourself honestly on both, then weight your time accordingly.

Competition: Where Seats Actually Are

CLAT's cutoff for the top NLUs sits among the most competitive in India — thousands of strong students fight for a few hundred top-NLU seats. PU Law's competition is regional and much thinner: 480 UILS seats with reference cutoffs of ~74.7 (Chandigarh), ~71.0 (Ludhiana) and ~69.0 (Hoshiarpur) merit, plus the 50:50 merit formula that lets a strong board score rescue an average entrance score. For a Chandigarh/Punjab student, the probability-weighted value of a UILS seat is genuinely high.

Which One Should YOU Focus On?

If this is your situation…Your primary exam
You dream of NLSIU/NLU Delhi and will relocate anywhereCLAT 2027 — national rank is everything
You want a strong law college close to home, lower cost, High Court exposurePU Law 2027 — UILS Chandigarh
Your Class 12 percentage is high but entrance performance is unevenPU Law — the 50% board weightage is your ally

You are in Class 11/12 in Punjab/Haryana/HP/ChandigarhBoth — dual prep, CLAT first

UILS Chandigarh vs a Lower-Tier NLU

The question nobody answers honestly: if your CLAT rank gets you an NLU outside the top 10–12, should you take it over UILS? My honest guidance:

  • Choose the mid/low NLU if it offers genuinely better placements (check its NIRF and placement report, not its brand), a law-firm culture you want, and you are ready for the fee + hostel cost.
  • Choose UILS Chandigarh if you want proximity to home, the Punjab & Haryana High Court ecosystem, far lower cost, and strong regional litigation/judiciary outcomes.
  • Never choose on brand alone. A mid-tier NLU with weak placements can be a worse deal than UILS with strong regional connections.

The Dual-Preparation Timeline (What SLA Students Follow)

PhaseFocus
Now – Nov 2026Full CLAT 2027 prep: passage reading, legal reasoning, mocks. PU GK/static syllabus rides along.
Dec 6, 2026CLAT 2027 exam. Then AILET (Dec 13, 2026) if targeted.
Jan – Mar 2027Class 12 boards first — remember 50% of PU merit is your board score.
Mar – mid-2027Switch to PU mode: 100-question mocks, GK/current affairs consolidation, PYQ analysis.
Mid-2027 (expected)PU CET UG Law exam → result → counselling (choice filling + rounds).

Proof That Both Is Achievable

SLA students prove the dual route works every year: Navneet Kaur cracked AIL LET (AIR 2, Army Institute of Law) and PU UILS (AIR 4); Vansh Garg took PU UILS AIR 4; Sania Sundan took AIR 1 HPU Law and AIR 8 PU Law; Bhavbhanjanjot Singh took PU Law AIR 7. Our 1000+ selections span NLUs and UILS alike — because the skill base is one, and the strategy is two. Small batches (15–25), 200+ mocks and 13+ years of both papers built into one programme: PU Law coaching with CLAT firepower, at Sector 25-D Chandigarh and online.

The Syllabus Overlap — Section by Section

Here is the honest map of where the two papers share ground and where they diverge:

TopicPU LawCLAT 2027Overlap
Constitution & Legal ReasoningPrinciple-fact sets, maxims, judgment-based questionsPassage-based legal reasoning with rules~80% — same concepts, different format
Current Affairs & GK40 direct MCQs — the biggest sectionPassage-based GK with static + current mix~70% — same news, different presentation
English10 direct questionsHeavy — RC passages dominate the paperCore grammar/vocab shared; CLAT is far heavier
Logical Reasoning10 direct questionsPassage-based critical reasoning~60% — PU is formulaic, CLAT is inferential
Quantitative AptitudeNot part of the paper10% — basic maths in passagesCLAT only

Cost Comparison — The Numbers Families Ask About

Cost HeadUILS Chandigarh RouteNLU Route
Annual college feeApproximately ₹25,000–30,000 per year at UILS (tentative, as per PU norms)Roughly ₹1.5L–3L per year at mid/high-tier NLUs — see our Top NLUs guide for college-wise fees
Coaching (2-year program)₹1,25,000 with PU + CLAT syllabus combined₹1,25,000 — the same combined program serves CLAT
Living costStay at home or hostels in ChandigarhHostel + mess at most NLU cities
Admission certaintyHigh — 480 seats, regional competitionLow-moderate — top NLUs close at elite ranks

For most families in Punjab, Haryana, HP and Chandigarh, the total 5-year cost gap between the two routes runs into several lakhs. That is not a reason to avoid CLAT — it is a reason to choose your route by outcomes, not by brand name.

How SLA Runs Both Exams in One Batch

  • One combined curriculum: Constitution, legal reasoning, current affairs, English and reasoning taught once, with exam-specific formats layered on top — no double syllabus, no wasted weeks.
  • CLAT-first sequencing: mocks and full-lengths follow the CLAT calendar (December 6, 2026) first, then pivot to the 100-question PU format for the mid-2027 cycle.
  • Board-score protection: since 50% of PU merit is your Class 12 percentage, we schedule board preparation windows so both scores climb together.
  • Small batches (15–25): direct faculty review of every mock, plus 200+ mock tests and PYQ sets included in the fee.
  • Track record on both sides: CLAT AIR 17 NLSIU (Anish Gupta) and AIR 32 NLSIU (Ananya Sharma) on the national side; PU UILS AIR 4s (Vansh Garg, Navneet Kaur) on the regional side — the same programme, both ladders.

The 30-Second Decision Tree

  • Want a national law school brand and will study anywhere? → Prioritise CLAT 2027; register when applications open in August 2026.
  • Want a top law college close to home, high court exposure, lower cost? → Prioritise PU Law 2027 for UILS Chandigarh.
  • Have a strong board percentage but moderate entrance ability? → Lean PU — the 50:50 merit formula protects you.
  • Fast reader, average factual recall? → Lean CLAT — comprehension rewards you.
  • Not sure yet? → Prepare for both with CLAT-first sequencing; the decision can wait until your December CLAT score arrives, months before the PU cycle.

That last point is the real answer to this article's title: you do not need to choose today. Prepare CLAT-first, decide later — and keep both doors open.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is easier — PU Law or CLAT?
PU Law is the easier paper on both counts. It has 100 MCQs in 90 minutes with 40% Legal Aptitude and 40% GK & Current Affairs, while CLAT has 120 questions in 120 minutes built on long comprehension passages. Competition is the bigger difference: CLAT draws lakhs of aspirants for the NLUs, while PU's regional competition for 480 UILS seats is far smaller.
Can I prepare for PU Law and CLAT 2027 together?
Yes — the two papers share roughly 70–80% of their core syllabus (Constitution, legal reasoning, current affairs, English, reasoning). The exam sequence helps too: CLAT 2027 comes first (December 6, 2026), and the PU exam is expected around mid-2027. Most of our successful students treat CLAT as the first deadline and carry that preparation into PU Law.
What is the difference between the PU Law and CLAT exam pattern?
PU Law: 100 MCQs in 90 minutes, offline OMR — Legal Aptitude 40, GK & Current Affairs 40, Reasoning 10, English 10, with -0.25 negative marking. CLAT: 120 questions in 120 minutes, passage-based comprehension across English, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, GK and Quant (10%), with -0.25 negative marking. CLAT rewards reading speed; PU Law rewards factual GK and concept knowledge.
Which is better — UILS Chandigarh or a lower-tier NLU?
If your CLAT rank lands you in an NLU outside the top 10–12, UILS Chandigarh is often the smarter choice for students from Punjab, Haryana, HP and Chandigarh: lower cost, proximity to family and the High Court, strong regional placements and litigation exposure. But if you qualify for a top NLU like NLSIU, NALSAR or NLU Delhi, the national brand and placement outcomes generally outweigh UILS.
When is the CLAT 2027 exam and the PU Law 2027 exam?
CLAT 2027 is scheduled for December 6, 2026 (registration opens August 2026). The PU Law entrance 2027 cycle has no confirmed date yet — the 2026 cycle ran with the exam on April 26, 2026, so the next cycle is expected around mid-2027 as announced on cetug.puchd.ac.in. This gap makes combined preparation very practical.
